Evaluating Probability Distribution Functions for the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index over Ethiopia

نویسندگان

چکیده

Drought indices are used to identify and monitor drought events. The standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) is a widely based on accumulated water balance. There is, however, no broad consensus which probability distribution the most appropriate for balances. This issue investigated Ethiopia using 125 meteorological stations spread across country. Based long-term series, selection was made among generalized extreme value, Pearson type 3, logistics (Genlog) distributions. Additionally, effect of actual, instead potential, limited amount data (10, 15, 20, 25 years) explored. Genlog found be best all accumulation periods. Furthermore, there considerable difference amongst SPEI values estimated from three distributions identification wet or dry Next, significant differences between actual (SPAEI) SPEI, signifying importance proper monitoring. Finally, time series 20 years lead almost similar those more than 30 data, so could potentially assess in Ethiopia.

Assessing the climate change effects on Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), case study: Latian dam

Studying climate change and its effect on the intensity and frequency of drought can help the proper use of water resources and adaptation to the destructive effects of the drought phenomenon in the future decades. In recent decades, rising global temperatures have disturbed the planetchr('39')s climate balance and caused widespread climate change in most parts of the world. This research trie...

A Multiscalar Drought Index Sensitive to Global Warming: The Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index

The authors propose a new climatic drought index: the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI). The SPEI is based on precipitation and temperature data, and it has the advantage of combining multiscalar character with the capacity to include the effects of temperature variability on drought assessment. The procedure to calculate the index is detailed and involves a climatic wa...

modification of standardized precipitation index (spi) based on relevant probability distribution function

abstract spi is based on fitting a gamma distribution to precipitation amounts in selected periods. based on current research, the gamma distribution may not be fitted to annual precipitation of some regions. in order to evaluate this subject, annual precipitation have been used during 1958- 2007 at 11 synoptic stations in iran. in first step, values of spi and frequency of different classes of...

Global Ecosystem Response Types Derived from the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index and FPAR3g Series

Observing trends in global ecosystem dynamics is an important first step, but attributing these trends to climate variability represents a further step in understanding Earth system changes. In the present study, we classified global Ecosystem Response Types (ERTs) based on common spatio-temporal patterns in time-series of Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and FPAR3g an...
